TEXTILE INSECT PESTS in the HOME ENVIRONMENT

It is important to remember that textile insects such as carpet beetles and clothes moths can digest protein fibers such as wool, silk, and specialty hair fibers, but they will also find and feed on protein substances on synthetic fibers.

This means carpet, rugs, draperies and upholstery made from nylon, acrylic, polyester, acetate and other synthetics can harbor these insects if they contain food or beverage stains, blood, urine, perspiration or other sources of nutritional protein.

There are many insect pests that can invade our home environments and wreak havoc on our textile furnishings and/or our health as well.

Each of these pests may require special treatments to rid them from your home environment and some may require a call to a licensed pest control operator, but there is a way to help prevent an infestation and inhibit the growth of most insects...

Find out how by clicking here.

ALL ABOUT MOTHS

MYTH:

I only need to worry about moths if my furnishings are wool.

NOT TRUE!

In past years, textile-eating moths were common, due to the large amount of wool fibers in clothing and home furnishings. The popularity and widespread use of synthetic fibers has led to the incorrect assumption that damage from these insects is a thing of the past.

As mentioned in the article above, moths can eat nutritional protein on any fiber. Another interesting fact about these textile-eating moths is that unlike other varieties, they are not attracted to bright lights and tend to seek darker areas or dim light. This makes it very difficult to detect them in dark closets and drawers. It is most likely that you will notice fabric damage or larvae before you see the moths themselves.

Bedbugs are Back - Why?

Why are bedbugs back in the USA and in such large numbers? They seem to be on a march across all 50 states, infesting hotels, offices, apartment houses, hostels, shelters, movie theaters and retail stores or anywhere large numbers of people come and go.

What has happened?

These creatures have been a very irritating part of everyday life for most of human history. But in urban America, unlike many developing countries, they had virtually vanished due to the use of DDT and other pesticides.

Now these pesticides are banned and their resiliency to our remaining usable pesticides has left us almost without defense.

Find out what bedbugs look like, what they do, and what you should do if you think you have a bedbug infestation in your home by clicking here.
